You'll have folks tell you it's senseless because you can just install
ubuntu-desktop and have both K-- and U-- installed.  That's true and you
can also have XFCE4 (Xubuntu-desktop), IceWM, and any number of other
window managers/desktop environments and choose between them at login.
OTOH, having done just that for a while I have now gotten rid of
everything except Gnome and Ubuntu-desktop just to force myself to give
it a fair shot.  I suggest you do the same and try relying on /only/
those packages on the installation disk unless you have specific needs
not addressed by those, then install just the extras needed.
I came from an IceWM based distro (Libranet Linux, anyone remember it?)
and had a hard time letting go of the old and embracing the new.
Try it, you might like it.  Ubuntu has made some good choices.
