Evolution and gmail

I just got a new gmail account and have set it up in Evolution 2.10.0
(Ubuntu Feisty). I set up Evolution to chec my mail every minute, which
may be too often, but I prefer to get my messages as soon as possible.
The problem is that at times I get an error message that pops up and
tells me Evolution didn't receive a valid greeting from the server, and
sometimes it stops checking for messages so that I have to click
send/receive to start it checking mail again. Is there a way to suppress
this error message and force Evolution to keep checking for new mail?
And a side question: is there a way to have Evolution pick up my mail
and notify me when new mail arrives without having it fully running on
my desktop?
Thanks for any help,
Lorenzo
