Nvidia driver version mis-match keeps X from running

No NVIDIA package installed here. Only the Ubuntu distribution thereof.
I don't understand what happened.  My installation was working fine.  
Had been for 15 months.  I did a normal update of the system and it 
quits working.  Maybe Nvidia did something to their code that introduced 
a problem.  Maybe Ubuntu did something.

Still researching.
