adding mp3 to soundconverter?

Try installing gstreamer0.8-mad. It did the trick for me. I think that
soundconverter still uses some 0.8 packages instead of 1.0 so even
though you have mp3-codec installed you don't have the mp3 codec that
coundconverter uses.
