Ubuntu Server 6.06.1 does not boot on VIA EPIA ME6000

Here in lies your problem. The default kernel for the server install
doesn't support this architecture (i.e. it has been tweaked for
enterprise server hardware and _also_ doesn't support things like my AMD
K6 500)

Boot the live CD in rescue mode and install the appropriate kernel using
apt-get tools say :-

apt-get install linux-image-386

This should get your install to boot and you can then compile your own
kernel from there if you feel it is necessary.
