I'd try all the entries in the list (/dev/ttyS0 -/dev/ttyS3) on 
System/Administration/Networking/Modem Connection/Properties and
see if any of them work.  Also /dev/modem though I've never known that to
work when auto-detection is failing.

But I'm guessing you've already tried that.

Maybe you have a 'winmodem' or 'software modem'?

If so, consider an external modem - if the laptop has anywhere to
plug it in.
