Upgraded Dapper today - DVD drive no longer reads DVDs!

I had a problem similar to this, Audio CD's simply stopped loading but 
data and DVD were fine. I never figured out the root cause but you can 
try my solution.

Uninstall hal
Reinstall hal

Don't reboot in between, I made that mistake once when I was a real 
newbie and spent a long time figuring out how to get my system to let me 
back on the internet so I could reinstall.
You probably needed a reboot after the reinstall of hal though.
