Ctrl + Alt + BackSpace should restart X then you can log back in;
if you can't just exit and restart.
I'm guessing restarting will fix it. Sounds like the toolbar is still there
otherwise you wouldn't have the Exit and Firefox links. If above
stated restart doesn't work, try right clicking on the toolbar and
adding what you want back on.

gedit is part of Gnome. Are you using Gnome? If not use any editor.

What brand/model is your video card?
What brand/model and size monitor are you using?
