I have installed Ubuntu on a Dell XPS-R400 (Pentium II-400). It has
built-in sound. Ubuntu is not using the sound card. When I check in
the device manager, the sound card is identified as Crystal
Semiconductor CS423x, and there are several entries (joystick, MPU401,
SB emulation, and the like).
There are not any drives installed, and when I try to use the directions
on the ALSA website, I can't get them to work.
I have looked at about every website that makes reference to installing
sound card drivers and getting them to work, and nothing seems to help.
Thanks for any help you can give.
