Gaim works with both Gtalk and Yahoo!. While you can't get mail
notification for Gmail, it will work for Yahoo!. Gaim should come
pre-installed on Ubuntu, or you can run 'sudo apt-get install gaim' to
get it.

If you'd prefer to build it from source, you can grab it from the
development page on SourceForge here:

Otherwise you can grab a pre-compiled Debian package of the latest
beta here:
