Hi Shaakunthala!
So far I have Ubuntu Dapper, Suse 10.1, and Fedora Core 5 on this box.
I note you have XP! I would like to hear the process you used to do
this since several in my local LUG are in that process. My guess is
XP first. Any problems with XP re-writing the MBR? Are you useing XP
to bootload?
One strange thing that occurred in my process is that parted (my
intended partitioning tool) continuously came up with a "unsupported
feature" error when trying to access the partitions I wanted to
resize. This would appear to be related to the way the large disk
(80GB) was indexed. I read some "scary" ways of getting around this
and decided to take a kludgey but easy way of using the Ubuntu
(Dapper) live / install cd to partition the disk (it always just
works!). I actually did install Dapper each time and re-wrote the new
Dapper install with the new OS I was installing.
What people have been telling you about the tendency of the new OS to
install GRUB itself is true. In my case I have never contended with
that, I simply assume that the new OS will be where the "active"
grub.conf or menu.lst will be. I then copy / paste from the other
grub configuration files (on the other partitions) to make a boot load
menu with all those I want in the order I want. Currently:
Ubuntu
FC5
XEN (Suse 10.1)
Suse 10.1
Suse Failsafe
Suse Memtest
Ubuntu Recovery
Ubuntu Memtest
FC5 on hda4 was the last in so it is where the edits were made and I
am greeted by the FC5 splash when I boot (and a very long boot option
menu).
Have Fun!
Tod
