redirecting output to the clipboard in xubuntu

i've googled around for this and i found the solution seems to be
distro/windowmanager??? specifc.  anyone know how to redirect output to the
clipboard.

ie. i want to do something like

cat somefile.txt > [clipboard filedescriptor]

or grep something somefile.txt > [clipboard]

im running xubuntu 6.06
