totem plays AVIs just fine, but you may need to install extra plugins to
support the various codecs used. As lukew suggests, do look at
https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/codecs.html

If that still fails you, you may like to try the totem-xine and the
libxine-extracodecs package. These can be found in synaptic after
enabling the universe and multiverse repositories.
