Edgy (Gnome 16.0) Window Manager Problem

I'm not sure what I've done to cause this ( I assume I've done something
as I've not read of this occurring with anyone else yet).

When gnome starts up  "metacity" doesn't start so no windows have
menus/borders etc and gnome-panel doesn't work (it is running). If I
right click on the desktop and open a terminal, type in gnome-wm or
metacity, metacity starts and I get my full windows, menus and can click
on windows in gnome-panel. 

I have tried System/Preferences/Sessions and metacity is in this list
with a priority/rating of 20. but this doesn't seem to help.

Has anyone else suffered this and/or know how to fix it?
