HP Laserjet 1100, extremely slow printing

I also have an HP1100 attached to a windows XP box and shared to the
network.  I find getting the first page out impossible. The print job
just sits in the Windows print queue.  Can you please describe your
working setup (Samba etc)
I also tried using Unix print services on XP but that did not work at all.

I managed to share folders across both machines, but this printing
issue is a real pain.
