fire wall & anti-virus? do i really need it

Firewalls have other uses than blocking services. They can also do more 
specific things then this. For example, if you are running VNC on your 
Ubuntu machine, you can use Firestarter to make sure that only machines 
on your local network would be allowed to access it, or even a specific 
machine. Further than just straight up blocking something like most home 
routers allow you to do, you can define very specific rules allowing you 
to lockdown your network to your needs.
