Can this have something to do with the ls-R script in teTeX?
I was able to get letter size paper to work by running "sudo texconfig"
interactively. At the end of the interaction session, texconfig
ran the ls-R script. Things worked fine since then. Maybe
"sudo texconfig paper letter" works differently?
