Cannot Login as admin from UI

Hi,
I have Ubuntu 6.06 LTS installed on my Intel machine. I am not able to access applications like Synaptic,ect.. from the UI. It says that I have entered the wrong password. When I do "sudo synaptic" on the terminal , it works fine by entering the same password. I can run synaptic, but not from the UI. does gksudo have some problem?
Can anyone help me on this.
