That sounds like a lot of needless work. ;-)
Instead, make sure the Ubuntu Multiverse repository is enabled in your 
sources.list file and..


	$ sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jre

	Or if you prefer,

	$ sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jdk


Badda bing. Badda boom.
