I was not in /proc when I did the grepped ls:
------------------------------------------------
tod at tod-desktop:/dev$ ls | grep sd?
tod at tod-desktop:/dev$ ls | grep sd?
sda
tod at tod-desktop:/dev$ pwd
/dev
tod at tod-desktop:/dev$
-----------------------------------------------
You may need to install it but lsusb would be a good tool for now.
Also, google "usb linux" and read up on it. You sould find things
change in /var/log/syslog when you connect a usb device.
