Toolbar button size in OpenOffice

I would like to know how to change the size of the buttons in the
toolbars of all of the various OpenOffice.org applications, such as the
spellcheck, insert ellipse, print, shadow effect, etc. buttons.  My dad
finds them annoyingly large, and would like to shrink them down a bit. 
Actually, the icons themselves aren't even too bad, but have quite a bit
of blank grey space surrounding each one, particularly in KDE it seems. 
Where is this option?  (Is it a KDE/Gnome or OOo level thing?) 
Hopefully this is reasonably simple to access, but we couldn't find it.
