If you want to activate Numlock after login into Gnome, you do not need
numlockx. I get used have it installed in past also, but now at last
with Gnome 2.14 it is not necessary anymore.

Just press the numlock button on your keyboard the press ALT+F2 and
enter gnome-session-save.
This will save the current state of your Desktop, including the numlock
state.
