You may have to set Capture so that it uses the Mic (instead of Line,
CD, Video, etc).

You can do this by running alsamixer; press Tab, so that 'Capture' is
highlighted, then using the cursor keys, move over the Mic column and
press space to enable it.

For a command line interface, try the amixer command.
