Synaptics Touchpad & USB Mouse

I am using Ubuntu 6.10 on a laptop.

With other distro's, my touchpad is automatically detected and
configured to use the synaptic driver. Ubuntu does not do this. So, I
have to change the "driver" section of my xorg.conf from "mouse" to
"synaptics" and then all the tap's/buttons work correctly on my
touchpad.

I have one outstanding issue though. When I am using my laptop at home,
I like plugging in my USB mouse instead of relying on the touchpad. On
other distros, the usb mouse is automatically detected/configured as
soon as it is plugged in.

Ubuntu doesn't do this, and I would like to know if anyone has any clue
on how to get it to work. (Or if it's even possible.)

(FYI: I had these same issues on Ubuntu 6.06LTS)

Thanks!

Shawn
