What I did was a bit more cautious. I logged to a console (CTRL+ALT+F1
e.g.) and did the upgrade from there (after logging out of the desktop
environment).
I think you should wait till the upgrade finishes. Depending on the
speed of connection you get, this might take a few hours. However, if
you have reason to believe that the computer has hanged and probably the
upgrade has stopped happening, you could kill the upgrade process
(CTRL+C or killing the actual apt-get process). Then try logging out,
going to a console and killing gdm (or kdm if you use that) and try the
upgrade again.
BTW, make sure you have enough disk space to download new packages (this
is independent of the method used for upgrading).
