my suggestion:
let's hope daniel t. chen pops in and gives advice on this :-)
but let's try this:
since i don't use kde i don't have a clue if there is a graphical
frontend for controlling alsa, but on the commandline there is
alsamixer. so open a terminal and type 'alsamixer' (without the quotes)
and check 'master' and 'pcm' and 'wave'. if they're too low, raise them.
and since the interfce isn't that much intuitive:
leftarrow/rightarrow toggles between channels,
uparrow/downarrow raises/lowers volumes
Esc quits alsamixer.
