On a Dell inspiron 5160, wpa worked out of the box running Ubuntu Edgy
Eft and 2.6.17 kernel :)

I was successful in connecting to a linux access point (PC with D-Link
DWL-G520 wireless card in master mode, with hostapd running for WPA)
using the nm-applet. The applet asked for the WPA key. I entered the key
and I was connected. Pretty smooth. On the other hand, to connect to
that access point using Windows XP, I had to install a patch from their
site.

BTW, the Linux access point is running Debian Etch. Both WEP and WPA
work using the D-Link PCI wireless card which as an atheros chipset.
