With VMWare Workstation, you'll have to tell it how much of your total
RAM you're willing to allocate in order to run the guest OS (like
WinXP). I'm afraid with 256Mb at your disposal you have very little, if
anything, to spare. WinXP on its own, I believe, needs at least 256Mb to
run without much pain.
I'm in a similar situation to yours, i.e. some assignments I have to
submit must be done in Windows XP/2000 (for example in MS Access) and
there's nothing I can do about it. I run Windows in VMWare Workstation,
I allocated 512Mb for this out of 2Gb in total. I have a good 256Mb RAM
video card and yet things are a little slow in Windows although it's not
painful. And it works. And I don't have to reboot. But you need
resources for this kind of setup, yes. Alternatively, you can always
dual boot your box, your university should supply you with the copy of
Windows (and what not) to do your assignments (my did).
