  Thanks for that I had just about given up edgy. I had tried all the flashes 
ie the one in the repos, 7 from adobe and 9 beta. I had also tried 
uninstalling firefox and using the tar.gz from mozilla, none worked properly.
Now I have the mozilla tar.gz installed and it works great.
 Btw there is a great extension for firefox called gmail notifier that may be 
of help to you :)
