If you wish to program purely for the microsoft environment the you
will have to use microsoft tools. Even web page designers have to hack
around the microsoft s**t to get their pages to show properly as Mr
Gates refuses to abide by the WWW Consortium standard for browsers and
insists on defining his own unique standards. Microsoft does nothing to
enable/encourage innovation outside it's own highly controlled
environment.

Unfortunately, academic institutes are compelled to propagate the MS
system because that is what business believes it wants, and business is
what pays the bills. Short-sighted but understandable.

Sorry - MS rant over.

Learn programming on whichever platform suits you - the fundamentals
will carry you through a lifetime - but don't tie yourself into any
particular system.

Peace! John
