local vs. remote drivers for adding network printer

So I set up a print server with CUPS, and I'm now dealing with how to
add the network printer for other machines.  On both Ubuntu and Windows
I get asked for information about the printer model and what drivers to
use.  However, this is all set up on the server end, so shouldn't I be
able to use it with any computer regardless of what drivers they have
available individually?
