Java installation troubles on 6.10

Folks,

I've tried to install j2re using apt-get and the Synaptics package
manager. Once either program downloads Java and starts to install it,
both hang up on a license-agreement "screen" that wants the user to
click on OK before installation goes any farther. But neither installer
allows that kind of interactivity; the license agreement screen will not
respond to any attempt to answer OK. Not only does this prevent me from
installing Java this way, but the java package remains on a updates or
install list somewhere, preventing me from using apt-get or Synaptics
from installing anything else (Java appears to be first in the queue).
Any way out of this?

With best regards,

Pete Spotts
