I recently bought this book, by Marcel Gangne, published by Addison
Wesley, and it seems good, particularly for beginners who are - just
as it says - moving to ubuntu. The level of explanation will suit long
time windows users (who I come into contact with a lot). The dvd
included is 6.06 Dapper desktop and it is comfortable to read and use.
It has 463 pages. It includes a brief initial section about the Linux
culture and background, then in detail, how to run and install the dvd
- that is ubuntu. A later chapter covers adding Kubuntu desktop. A
desktop overview, nautilus file manager, and some simple desktop
customising follow. A section on hardware and printers seems useful
and realistic, as does connecting to the internet and installing new
applications - with a brief discussion about security.
Subsequent chapters all are appropriate, and I do not hesitate to
recommend this book to any real beginners out there who are currently
using another operating system and wishing they were not. UK price is
around 25 uk pounds (approx 35 euros).
If you are an established linux user who is beset with family members
or friends with non linux computer problems, this book would be an
excellent choice of present.....
