Ubuntu comes with a lot of carefully prepared software (around 12 GB in
6.06, including MPlayer). For a newbee IMHO it's a good idea to stick
with this software as it's tested and easy to install (and uninstall if you
don't like it anymore). 

Of course it's possible to compile software yourself (compiling
e.g. MPlayer is quite easy but requires to install a lot of software
first) or install packages from other distributions (like RedHat) but
doing this it's easy to damage your system

Ubuntu comes with /bin/cat but doesn't include pigeons ;-)
