Ex-Mandrake user needs tutorials for Apt

I'm an Ex-RPM person newly landed in the Debian Universe and totally
bewildered by the packaging stuff.

Can someone point me at some tutorials and references for the package tools.
Specifically:
the apt-xxx tools
package re-configuration
alternates

Everything I've found so far is either too newbie-oriented and too light on
detail, or one line references.
