does it work for you in CentOS ?  if so, you can "migrate" the X
config-file to ubuntu

another "quick" solution is to use a recent knoppix-cd, and if that
works fine, you use the config-file for X from that

"migrating" XF86Config-4 to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (the latter is used by
ubuntu dapper)
is basically about changing the keyboard-driver from "keyboard" into
"kbd", and removing the line with the XFree86rules in the
keyboard-section
