installing ssl with postfix - question of need

With all the onlist and off list help I have been receiving, I have now
expanded what I want to do with my email. I want to grab my email from
Yahoo and Gmail as well. I was pointed to a tutorial for using postfix
with ssl but I found myself with this question.

When I connect to some mail server, whether it be Gmail or my own, they
are the ones with the SSL certificate. I just have to have something
that works with their authorization and security parameters. Right? But
does that mean I have to install OpenSSL?
