Using TLS - how do you know if your isp or mail host requires this?

Please don't top post, it makes it impossible to have a proper conversation.

Since this server closes connections made from here, I suspect that your ISP
actually requires you to be inside their network to make a connection - in
which case they probably don't need or require a secure connection.

Incidentally, never trust an ISP that tells you they don't provide IMAP. 
There _is_ an open IMAP port on that server.  Whether it really works, I
can't say, but my ISP claims not to provide IMAP either, but it works :-)  

In reality, they usually drop in a mail server package that works for either
POP or IMAP, leave it in the default configuration, and don't have a clue
what it really does.
