I also tried disabling the on board via-rhine and different combinations of pci ifs and still the same results

Subject: confusing network interface problems
I have set up an installation of the latest server edition (what is that 6.06?) any way I set it up on a machine with an onboard IF (via-rhine) and one pci IF (posssibly realtek 8139)
Every thing went fine an I had no problems, however after making a clone of the disk and trying to use on an identical machine (except possibly the pci IF which in this case is definitely realtek 8139) I suddenly have a problem detecting the interfaces
lspci shows the interfaces
as does
dmesg |grep eth
but when I try /etc/init.d/networking restart it tells me there is an error starting eth0 – no such device
also ifconfig shows only lo
while ifconfig –a shows lo and eth2 ??
I have tried loading drivers by hand using modprobe but that doesn’t seem to be the problem either
Regards
Jean
