If (like me) you are not sure of the name, you can use nautilus to look
at /usr/bin to find the exact spelling. You could also look up the
program you want to start in synaptic. Click on properties, and look at
what is under the installed files tab. For instance, I just looked at
gnome-art. In the list of installed files, there is
/usr/bin/gnome-art. So it can be run with the command gnome-art. If
you are trying to start a program that you installed manually, things
may be in different places.

PS. There may be an easy way of doing the same thing from the terminal,
but that is out of my small area of use.
