Using TLS - how do you know if your isp or mail host requires this?

the old-fashioned pop3 is by default sending out encrypted username+password
via port 110
there's however pop3-ssl (=pop3s) on port 995
imap-ssl on port 993 and a non-official port for smtp-auth is 465
you can try the following : telnet ISP-domain-name 993
it's however likely that they have special machines for email, like :
mail.ispname.net, smtp.ispname.net
but why don't you ask the helpdesk/support of your ISP what they offer ?
