Resolution problems

  I have been having an on-going problem with resolution with Dapper and now with Edgy.
  When I logout of Gnome, and pick another window manager such as ICEWM, more often than not the first time the mouse goes to the bottom of the screen, the screen collapses into a band at the top of the monitor. Seems to be a change in resolution will trigger the problem. Thing is I can change resolutions in Gnome with no problem. When the screen collapses, I have to kill the Xserver with ctrl-alt-backspace and then I can go into IceWM without a problem.
   Anybody got any ideas ?
