alsa and multiple devices

Is it me or is there really currently no decent way to switch between
the different audio outputs? I have a Soundblaster live 5.1 (yes I found
an old emu10k1 card) and a usb headset. Currently the only way I have
found to switch is to have mplayer setup to work with the headset and
all the others to work with the soundblaster.

So the question? How do you switch between the audio output?
