My purpose is really to move files between my work / laptop / windows
machine to my home / ubuntu machine. Currently on small files I just
email them to home but since I have a dial up connection at home and a
T1 line at work I will down load larger files at work and burn them to
CD. Basically I end up doing some work on the home machine and some
work on the lap top and so I move files back and forth all the time.
I may work my way up the food change and start with the most basic
connection the move towards samba since it seems like a useful skill to
know, especially since I plan on sticking to Ubuntu for the house.
Eventually getting more than one Ubuntu machine and would like to
connect them as well.
I'll try the basic connection tonight.

In addition to that which Matt posted, if you merely want to move files
between the two machines, FTP is sufficient. I presume you want to mount
each others drives though, which will require Samba installed on the
Ubuntu box.
So - enlighten us - what are your requirements?
