I thought I should post an update here for all who may have read this 
thread.

All I can say is hardware failure!

I plugged in a new nVidia Gforce FX5200( $47 including shipping from 
globalcomputer.com) and everything was fine.  No more random hang ups.  
Same driver( of course! ).

I can run OpenOffice.org and all my favorite 3d games(planet penguin 
racer).   :-) 
My Ubuntu system is ROCK solid again.
I hate hardware(when it fails).
