CNN wants Windows Media Player

Ditto here. However you can configure without trying to go to a video by
Applications|Sound & Video|Mplayer Movie Player
 - when mplayer comes up, right click on the vido screen portion then
click on Preferences.

Mine are set at:
Audio: alsa
Video: xv + Enable double buffering
