If you definitely want/need a modem, play it safe and buy an external modem.
Something which connects to your serial port and doesn't require any drivers
will most definitely work in ANY version of Linux.

Personally, I swear by my USR Courier which ran bulletin board for over 10
years, 24/7 and is still going strong.
