Sound card problems

greetings

I have an onboard soundcard that is identified as a VIA 8237 by alsa. I
understand from the many many many (does this sound frustrated?)
webpages that this should support 5.1 sound output. I have played with
dxs_support, I have tried setting the '3D Control - Switch'. The card
never has a surround51 parameter which it should have according to all
the documentation I have read.

Please advice what I can do to remedy this (or send me a nice emu10k1
card :) )
