Firefox changed this in 2.0 betas.

Another unexpected change I've noticed is that you can no longer use
Alt+letters for accesskeys in web pages; you have to press
Alt+Shift+letter instead.

Go to about:config and set browser.backspace_action to 0.

I think that page refers to Firefox 1.5.
