Looks like I was telling fibs in my previous post.

It takes a few minutes of use but odd things do start to happen.
Starting an application from the menu results in multiple instances 
trying to start.  Opening the terminal window the prompt just scrolls up 
the screen like the enter key is jammed.

I've tried this with KDE, XFCE and Gnome sessions and all produce 
similar results after a few minutes use.

Deleting the packages removes the problem.
